Gooey Guest Favors

Whenever Joe and I get a chance to visit our former hometown of St. Louis, at the very top of our to-do list is: EAT GOOEY BUTTER CAKE. We’d both enjoyed the tasty dessert throughout childhood and it never occurred to me until we moved to Florida that gooey butter cake is actually unique to the St. Louis area. So it’s always a special occasion for us to indulge in this delicious, sugary treat. Which is why I was absolutely ecstatic to find a company in St. Louis that specializes in miniature gooey butter cakes as guest favors at weddings!!
I love this idea for a few different reasons. First, I’ve never met a person that does not LOVE gooey butter cake. Made from yellow cake batter, loads of sugar, eggs, cream cheese, and almond extract, there really is no other dessert that tastes quite like it. So I’m quite sure our guests will be delighted to have a different type of dessert to enjoy along with the wedding cake. Secondly, I feel like gooey butter cake represents our personality as a couple. It’s something we always look forward to on our St. Louis visits and love trying the different flavors together. And finally, after speaking to the owner of the companyGooey Louie, I discovered that each cake comes in a beautiful personalized box and embellished with ribbon, all at a very reasonable cost!

I can’t wait to see the cute mini-cakes once they are ready on our wedding day! Each is topped off with a little utensil and an insert explaining the history of gooey butter cake. And these favors will go perfectly with our table themes that are all tied in with the spirit of St. Louis… but I’ll explain that in a future blog!

What You Need to Make this Best Cake Recipe:
1 (18.25 ounce) package yellow cake mix
1 cup butter, melted
5 eggs
1/2 tsp vanilla
1 (8 oz) package cream cheese
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
3 cups powdered sugar
What You Need to Do:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Mix cake mix, butter, 1/2 tsp vanilla, and 3 eggs.
Pat into a 9 X 13 inch pan. Mix cream cheese, 2 eggs, 1/2 tsp vanilla with a mixer. Slowly beat in powdered sugar. Pour over cake. Bake for 40 to 45 minutes. Cool. Tips: Try adding coconut or chocolate or making cupcakes!
