Everybody Loves Wedding Cake!

It’s not uncommon to serve a dessert other than the actual wedding cake these days. In fact, a few extra treats (like candy as guest favors) might be the best way to make sure everyone fully satisifes their sweet tooth. But it also seems like cakes are more often simply being used as a means of decor at the reception instead of their real purpose, which is being the star of the dessert hour. My belief is, what’s the point in having your cake if you can’t eat it too? Which is exactly why we have no problem serving the wedding cake itself as dessert after the meal. The problem is… I am having a hard time deciding what style to order! The possibilities are virtually endless. The classic round shape? Modern square? Two tiers or four? Stacked layers or side-by-side? Fondant or cream? Single cupcakes on a stand? And on top of those decisions, you have to deal with the countless cake flavors and fillings. Where to begin?!
It looks like as of now, we are leaning toward the round shape with three tiers. We won’t be visiting bakeries to taste cake flavors until sometime next Spring, but visions of cake ideas are already dancing around in my head. One thing is taken care of though — we already have our cake topper, which should help the baker help us decide a great theme for decorating the rest of the cake. We want something pretty simple and elegant, but not necessarily traditional or plain. We want fondant. And we want everything on the cake (with exception of the topper) to be edible.
In an attempt to spark some creative thought, I’ve been searching high and low on the Internet to find something that matches the style we are going for. Although I haven’t found anything quite like what we are envisioning, I have come across some pretty fantastic designs that I think most would appreciate:

So what are your thoughts on the wedding cake? Should it’s primary purpose serve as the main dessert, or just decoration? How are you narrowing down the possibilities to come to a final decision?
